A few weeks ago, I was invited to try a yoga class by Leah, one of the owners of The Zen Zone, a yoga Spot (413 Northwest Murray Road) located in Lee’s Summit. Right off the bat, Leah wouldn’t allow me to think of yoga as some girly, new-age exercise cult. Along with her invite, she included a link about the Zen Zone hosting the manly Missouri Mavericks Hockey Club as their official yoga studio. I had no excuses not to try yoga for the first time. If hockey players do yoga, everyone does yoga. I was amazed to learn just how correct that statement would turn out to be.
My yoga experience began with a 9:15 Yoga 101 class on a beautiful Saturday morning (See Schedule Here). I arrived in time to see the earlier class let out.Debra, the early class instructor was talking to class participants about their poses and greeting those in the class I was to attend with smiles and hugs and even a “Where were you last week?”. There was a feeling of friendship and support that even I could feel as an observer. Debra noticed that I was a new face and asked me if it was my first time. She ran through some of the basic poses that I would encounter in my class one on one. She then handed me off to the Yoga 101 instructor, Rebecca.
Rebecca got me set up with a mat, block, strap and eye pillow; all of the equipment I would need as a beginner. I situated myself right in the middle of the studio so that I could see the instructor and receive all the instruction I was going to need. The studio is a beautiful space. Lots of natural light, calming plants and decor; really serene. At a glance, I noticed right off that there were all different types of people in the class. Men and women, young and old; people with all levels of fitness. While listening to the instructor during the series of motions and static poses that comprised the physical portion of the class, I learned that yoga is a personal practice and that there is something different to be gained for everyone. The goal was not to do the poses perfectly, but to “honor your body” by doing your interpretations of the poses to the best of your ability. Your yoga practice is what you want it to be.
