Lee's Summit Resource Recovery Park

I really wanted to get this post in on Earth Day but with two daughters with birthdays on April 22nd, I had more pressing things to do than blog about garbage. But now that I have a few minutes the day after, I'd like to take a few minutes to point out one of the City of Lee's Summit's great services, the Resource Recovery Park. Operated by the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department and located on Hamblen Road, the Resource Recovery Park is a one stop solution to being green and saving some green of your own.

The Resource Recovery Park provides an option for citizens of Lee's Summit to dispose of yard waste and reclaim its value through compost and mulching operations. Dropping your yard waste here is an alternative to paying for curbside service through one of 5 solid waste haulers operating within the City. At the rate of $.75 per bag (full rates here), you can drop your leaves, grass clippings and other lawn waste so that it can become useful to you ounce again. Lee's Summit residents have the opportunity to reclaim the money spent to dispose of their yard waste by picking up FREE COMPOST and MULCH for re-use in their lawn and garden. Compost is a natural, slow release fertilizer that you can use to feed your lawn. Funny how nature takes care of its self, huh?

Collocated at the Resource Recovery Park is the south Recycling Center. Prior to my trash company's curbside recycling program, I would take all of my plastics, paper, cardboard, glass and aluminum cans down to the Recovery Park on Saturday morning, sort them out and be on my way. There's usually a volunteer available on Saturday mornings to help you unload and sort if you'd like assistance. I still head down every other week to recycle my glass (no curbside glass service) in the Ripple Glass bin provided by Boulevard Brewing Company. The Ripple Glass bin is great because it cuts out sorting your glass colors so now I can be in and out in a flash.

On March 4th, the Lee's Summit City council approved the issue of state-mandated, two-year notice to all solid waste haulers providing services in the City of their intent to develop and implement a City-Wide curbside recycling program. Our town is focusing on recycling as a quality of life issue for us citizens. Responsible and sustainable practices are important for all municipalities and I'm glad to see that the City of Lee's Summit is taking ownership of that responsibility.
